Having a malted shake is one of our summer rituals here in North Jersey. We usually frequent the original Applegate Farm in Montclair, NJ. It was around last year that a franchise opened up close to us. On a sticky, rainy stormy night this summer, we ventured out for a malted and made it a few minutes to closing (9:30 pm, I think). It seemed like a bunch of people had the same idea, because there was a last-minute dash that quite overwhelmed the single ice cream guy on duty.
Ice cream, no surprise, is the specialty. Applegate has light and creamy ice cream and sorbets in seasonal flavors. People swear by the hand-packed ice cream, which somehow tastes better.
I took this shot of DJKung while we were waiting on line. They have bananas by the counter, although it is quite rare that I've seen anyone order a banana split.
Here are some of the ice cream flavors they have.
So finally it was our turn and DJKung and I split a medium malted shake. DJKung felt that they made it somewhat differently here, although I could not discern any difference. It was sweet and had sharp malty taste, definitely hit the spot that night.
